The Sanborn House: A Journey Worth Celebrating.

On October 25, Sanborn House opened its doors to the community for an afternoon celebrating twenty years of stewardship by the Winchester Historical Society. The gathering offered an opportunity to look back at the work that has helped preserve this remarkable historic house, revisit its transformation through before-and-after photographs, and reflect on the many people who have contributed to its care.

For those who have been part of Sanborn’s journey, the photographs evoked a profound appreciation for all that has been accomplished together. For others, they inspired wonder and admiration at just how far the house has come. That shared appreciation carried throughout the celebration, as the rooms filled with laughter, animated conversations, and genuine excitement.

Artifacts from the curators’ collection allowed visitors to step back in time, while a short film chronicled the early days of the stewardship and a scavenger hunt invited them to explore the house with a spirit of discovery.

More than a celebration of a building, the afternoon was a celebration of the community behind it: the volunteers, donors, craftspeople, preservation professionals, and supporters whose contributions, large and small, have helped shape the Sanborn House’s story over the past twenty years. As the Winchester Historical Society continues its stewardship, the Sanborn House remains not simply a reminder of the past, but a living part of Winchester’s community life, with more stories yet to be told.

A special edition of The Black Horse Bulletin, prepared for the occasion, offered guests a keepsake of the celebration and a tribute to the community that continues to shape the Sanborn House’s future.
