Trolley Tours featuring historic locations in Winchester will again be part of the Town Day festivities, Saturday, June 7th. This year we are fortunate to have two trolleys accommodating twelve tours. Each tour holds forty people. The tours leave from Winchester Common and are approximately 45 minutes to an hour long.

Free tickets are required. Tickets for all tours can be picked up after 9:00 AM at the Trolley Booth on the Winchester Drug side of the Common. Come early as the tours sell out. The tours are sponsored by the Winchester Savings Bank and tour guides are provided by the Winchester Historical Society. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Join in a Town Day tradition and enjoy the ride into town history.

Historic Preservation and Architecture
Tuesday, May 20, 2003 -- 7:30 p.m.
Symmes Room, Unitarian Church

A slide-illustrated introduction to old-house watching! Focusing on homes in Winchester, Arlington, and Cambridge, learn about the concepts of classical, romantic, and vernacular design in American domestic architecture, covering 1720 to 1915. Suggestions offered on where and when each type of house is found, and pointers given for looking at them.

Mr. Hill specializes in the preservation, restoration, and rehabilitation of old and antique buildings. He holds a Master's degree in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. His many clients include Hancock Shaker Village; Strawberry Banke Museum; Longfellow's Wayside Inn, Sudbury; The Jackson Homestead, Newton; The Nantucket Historical Association; and numerous private individuals.

Free and open to the public. Refreshments served.


New England Quilt Museum Quilts by Jennifer Gilbert New England Quilt Museum


Spring Meeting
“Preferred Taste in New England Quilts”
Jennifer Gilbert, Curator, New England Quilt Museum
Tuesday, April 29, 2003 -- 7:30 p.m.
Symmes Room, Unitarian Church

Learn the history of quilt making with a presentation that examines quilt production in New England in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Images of quilts from the permanent collection of the New England Quilt Museum will be shown as well as actual quilts that represent the trends and styles discussed from the NEQM's education textile collection.

Ms. Gilbert has curated a variety of exhibitions and managed national and international displays of quilts. She received her Masters Degree in Art History from UMASS Amherst, has been curator at the NEQM since 1995, and authored the book, "New England Quilt Museum Quilts".

Free and open to the public. Refreshments served.

“The Ernest Dudley Chase House”

Bill and Marie Kennedy kindly provided their beautiful Arts and Crafts home, built in 1912 by Ernest Dudley Chase, the noted artist and mapmaker from Winchester. A wonderful turn out enjoyed great food and conversation, and the opportunity to learn about Ernest Dudley Chase and his neighborhood.

WHS Fall Meeting
Tuesday, October 29, 2002 -- 7:30 p.m.

A former chief of police, a one-time student nurse at Winchester Hospital, a Department of Public Works employee, other longtime Winchester residents all were interviewed in the early 1980s as part of the Society's oral history project. Come be entertained with their interesting and humorous stories--not found in the History of Winchester!

Dick and Dot Santos, talented Winchester actors, will perform the parts of those interviewed. Then a live oral history interview with Marilyn Preston will show the process of collecting oral histories as she recalls growing up in town in the 1940s and 1950s.
