Trolley Tours Highlight Historical Society’s Town Day Events

The Winchester Historical Society once again coordinated and hosted speakers for the popular Trolley Tours of Winchester on Town Day, Saturday, June 7. There were two trolleys, providing eight tours throughout the day, concluding with round trips to the Strawberry Festival and Antique Car Show at the Sanborn House.

The tours, which were made possible by a generous donation from the Winchester Savings Bank, included:

Middlesex Canal – 10:00 A.M. and 11:00 A.M.
Margie Harvey
described the original route of the Canal which gave access to the Atlantic seacoast from the industrial centers farther inland. The canal passed through Winchester from the Mystic Lakes, through the flats, and down past the cemetery to Horn Pond in Woburn. Margie pointed out remnants of the canal, often located in places you may pass routinely without noticing there’s a piece of history right in your neighborhood.

Along Main Street to Symmes Corner – 10:30 A.M. and 11:30 A.M.
Susan Keats
presented a tour of Main Street toward the south, down to Symmes Corner and back through the Bacon Street area, with descriptions of the Black Horse Tavern and the homes of various renowned inventors and town leaders from Winchester’s past.

Development of North Main Street – 12:00 Noon and 1:00 P.M.
John Clemson
led a building-by-building tour of North Main Street. You won’t view our Main Street as just having a few service stations; you’ll be treated to a whole new way of looking at the historic buildings and the changes over time that have become part of this gateway into the town center.

Winchester: Homes of the Stars – 12:30 P.M. and 1:30 P.M.
Ellen Knight
led the trolley past homes of some of the many famous people who have lived in Winchester. The list includes prominent figures in art, business, politics, and especially stars of the stage and screen.

Strawberry Festival and Antique Car Show – Sanborn House, 2:15 P.M. - 3:45 P.M.
Trolleys made continuous loops to the Sanborn House beginning at 2:15 P.M.

children, minds, morals, health, and safety.

Ellen Knight presented a program on the great theatre controversy in Winchester from 1917 until the first theatre opened in 1937.

“The Great Movie Fight” would stand out in the minds of many townspeople as the single most bitter confrontation of the generation—and in a community well-known for not suffering in silence. It was a long hard battle that raised tempers, ruined dispositions, and ruptured friendships of many years’ standing. When it was all over the town’s first and only motion picture theatre was established in a handsome structure on Main Street.

This meeting was preceded by the annual election of officers and directors.

Following in the Footsteps of…
Edwin Ginn,
Civic Leader, Publisher, and Advocate for World Peace.
by Robert Rotberg, Harvard University

Tuesday, November 13, 2007, 7:30 p.m.
Winchester Room, Winchester Town Hall

The life of Edwin Ginn (1838-1914) was one dedicated to good citizenship, the highest standards of education, philanthropy, and international peace. According to his friend Samuel W. McCall, “Ginn was a man for whom the people of our town had a great regard. He identified himself with the community, and he made himself one of the most useful citizens any community could have.”

Robert Rotberg, Director of the Program on Intrastate Conflict and Conflict Resolution at Harvard University and president of Ginn’s World Peace Foundation, discussed his book, A Leadership for Peace: How Edwin Ginn Tried to Change the World. Ginn, a Boston textbook publisher, became an advocate for world peace and alternatives to armed conflict for resolving disputes among nations. Along the way, he became a vegetarian, backed the wrong invention of library guru Melvil Dewey and assisted with civic improvements in Boston and Winchester, where he owned 60 acres when it was still mostly farmland.

Professor Rotberg is a long term resident of Lexington and has served 33 years as a member of Lexington Town Meeting. He is also a former member of the Lexington School Committee.

Professor Rotberg's book is currently available at Book Ends, Winchester. 781-721-5933. http://www.bookendswinchester.com/

"Telling Time"
by Bob Frishman of Bell-Time Clocks

Tuesday, September 25, 2007, 7:00 p.m.
Jenks Senior Center, 109 Skillings Road
opposite Winchester Town Hall - parking available

In this entertaining 45 minute lecture, Bob presented an overview of mechanical clock history, styles, makers, values, collecting, repairing and cultural importance. He showed slides of familiar and unusual timekeepers from his own collection and from the more than 5,000 clocks he has serviced. He brought antique clock movements and reference material for examination. Captivated by their marriage of decorative arts and advanced technology, Bob has been collecting, selling and repairing vintage timepieces since 1980 and is the owner of Bell-Time Clocks in Andover. (www.bell-time.com)

Following his talk, for a donation of $5.00 per item, Bob provided an “informal verbal appraisal” of timepieces brought by the audience. All donations will benefit the Winchester Historical Society and the Winchester Seniors Association
